I have wanted to go snowboarding in Australia for a long time, mainly cos its just always seemed like a pretty unlikely place to find snow…
So a mate and I left Sydney VERY early for the 500km 6 hour drive down to the cunningly named Snowy Mountains…
We got there as the end of a storm was rolling through and apparently there had been 45cms over the last week.
The first day at Perisher was pretty blizzardy but cleared up in the afternoon…the second day at Thredbo was bluebird with plenty of little pockets of pow…
The snow doesnt hang around cos it gets warm pretty quick but I have to say that, with loads of lifts and loads of trees, the set up at both Perisher and Thredbo was easily as good if not better than any of the commercial resorts I’ve ridden in NZ…
I’ve started captioning some images at the bottom of each shot.
- On the road by 4AM, covered about 250kms by dawn...
- Pin straight road going on for ages - Seems nice safe for some solid cruising huh?
- Yea thats what I thought too...Unfortunately didnt count on some coppers hiding in a bush with a radar gun...doh
- We were on the mountain by 10AM...it was breezy but the sun was trying hard to break out...
- Blizzard rolled in!
- Heading up to Thredbo
- The national park is named after the highest Australian mountain Mt Kosciuszko at 2228m
- We found a little drop off to session
- Some surprisingly good terrain...Andy nailing a little pillow line
- Andy was looking to get the best out of every feature we found...:)
- Old Stylee
- Aussie stylee
- Looking for lines in the trees
- Found a few...
- We went for a little hike looking for fresh pow
- Andy found some...
- phat lens
- The park had a couple of solid booters
- In the southern hemisphere its all about south facing slopes, not north facing...
- Back on the road heading home...only another 500kms to go...
